About Learning Impact Survey Builder

Learning Impact Survey Builder helps L&D professionals move beyond generic satisfaction surveys and create performance-focused learner feedback systems that diagnose learning, transfer, behavior change, support, barriers, enablers, and impact.

This tool is built on research from Designing Evaluation: Learning Evaluation with a Job Performance Focus by Dr. Will Thalheimer, providing a curated library of research-backed survey questions and frameworks proven to predict on-the-job performance.

Turning learner feedback into performance insight.

How to Use the Survey Builder

Step 1: Choose Your Survey Goal

Start by selecting what you want to measure. Options include:

  • Immediate Feedback — Post-training reactions and satisfaction
  • Comprehension — What learners understood and retained
  • Application Readiness — Confidence to apply learning on the job
  • Transfer & Behavior — Evidence of actual behavior change
  • Enablers — What supported successful transfer
  • Barriers — What blocked transfer or adoption

Step 2: Browse & Filter Questions

The library contains 71 research-backed questions. You can:

  • Use the Guided Mode (default) to see recommended questions for your goal
  • Click Show Advanced Filters to filter by tags, measurement level, response type, or framework
  • View question details including the rationale and measurement approach
  • See which questions are most relevant to your specific goal

Step 3: Build Your Survey

Add questions to your survey panel:

  • Click the + Add button on any question card to include it
  • Use "Add 3 Recommended" to quickly select top-matched questions
  • Or load an example journey like "Excel for Managers" to see a pre-built survey
  • See your selected questions appear in the right panel
  • Reorder questions or remove them as needed

Step 4: Optional — Tailor for Your Context

Customize question wording to fit your specific situation:

  • Go to the Tailor tab
  • Enter context like training topic, audience, behavior you want, or skills to practice
  • See how each question's wording adapts to your context in real-time
  • Use tailored versions in your final survey

Step 5: Export Your Survey

When ready, export in your preferred format:

  • JSON — For developers or custom platforms
  • CSV — For spreadsheets or data analysis
  • Markdown — For documentation or web publishing
  • Microsoft Forms — To directly create a shareable form

Choose Learner Mode for a clean, answer-focused format or Admin Mode to include question IDs and metadata.

Tip: Your survey selections are saved in your browser. Return anytime to continue building or export for later integration.
